Friends of the Community is a nonprofit organization founded in 2024 by Tiffany McElhannon, Jason McElhannon, and Shelly Woltmon with the mission of supporting individuals and families in need while fostering unity through love, kindness, and good food. The organization was established in response to the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which exposed significant gaps in access to food, resources, and community support for many local residents.
As families faced displacement, loss of income, and emotional hardship, Friends of the Community emerged as a grassroots effort to meet immediate needs and restore dignity during a time of crisis. Since its founding, the organization has grown from an emergency response effort into a sustained community resource, providing regular food assistance and support to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. The organization continues to partner with local churches, volunteers, and community groups to respond to evolving needs while strengthening long-term community resilience.

Our mission is to walk alongside individuals and families in the Upstate by meeting essential food needs, fostering connection, and offering hope through consistent, compassionate service.

We envision a community where no family goes hungry and neighbors thrive through shared responsibility and kindness.

After leaving a domestic violence situation, Tiffany experienced homelessness with her children and was lifted up by compassionate people who helped her rebuild her life. Along that journey, she saw firsthand how few resources exist for working families, inspiring her to help create the support she once needed.
Jason grew up in a low-income household and learned early how limited resources can be for working families who are doing their best to get by. That lived experience fuels his passion for Friends of the Community and his commitment to making sure support is available when it’s needed most.
Shelly grew up in foster care and experienced severe food insecurity, knowing firsthand the fear and uncertainty that hunger brings. That experience drives her passion to ensure no child ever has to endure the pain and worry of not knowing where their next meal will come from.
